Executive Summary

For a Madison Avenue pharmacy where prescriptions, registers, and insurance claims all run on live systems, downtime is a patient-care problem, not just an IT one. That's why Zitomer Pharmacy needs a technology partner it can reach instantly and trust completely. Since partnering with Absolute Logic in 1996, Zitomer has modernized from manual registers and copper phone lines into a resilient, current IT environment that rarely goes down.

Today, the pharmacy relies on Absolute Logic to manage its infrastructure and security, maintain HIPAA and PCI compliance, keep its Internet and phones reliable, refresh its hardware on a schedule, and respond within minutes whenever they need assistance.

Meet Zitomer Pharmacy

Zitomer Pharmacy has been a fixture on Madison Avenue for about seventy-six years, operating from three floors on Manhattan's Upper East Side. Alongside prescriptions, it carries health and beauty aids, cosmetics, and a wide range of healthcare items, serving a largely regular clientele of neighborhood customers. The business employs roughly fifty-five people, many of them with twenty-five or thirty years behind the counter. Frank Vella, Senior Vice President of Zitomer Pharmacy, has been with the company for forty-five years and oversees its technology.

The pharmacy depends on technology to a degree its storefront might not suggest. It operates sixteen registers and fills between four and seven hundred prescriptions a day, all of which depend on software and systems that have to stay online.

The Challenge

As a medical facility bound by HIPAA, Zitomer handles prescriptions that are accessed and shared constantly between the pharmacy, third-party insurance companies, and doctors' offices. When the network, the phones, or a server goes down, it means the staff cannot fill prescriptions or ring up sales, which turns a technical problem into a direct problem for patients waiting on medication. For an operation like this, being unable to reach its own IT company is simply not acceptable. In healthcare, technology failures don't simply interrupt operations, they also delay patient care.

“It's very important that we're not down at any given time for any reason, whether it's the phone system, the Internet, or a server going down. You call Absolute Logic, and somebody either picks up right away or a minute later you get a phone call asking what's going on, and they try to resolve it over the phone. If not, they send somebody down.” -Says Frank Vella

That responsiveness is the foundation of the relationship between the two teams. For businesses where technology and customer service are inseparable, response time isn't a customer service metric, it is part of the business itself.

From DOS and Copper Lines to Modern, Resilient Infrastructure

The partnership goes back to 1996, when computers still ran on DOS and phone lines were made of copper. Zitomer started working with Al Alper of Absolute Logic to replace its manual registers with computerized ones, running early credit-card transactions over copper lines and modems.

Over nearly three decades, as technology has advanced, Absolute Logic rebuilt the pharmacy's environment around it. The team wired the building, moved the pharmacy onto current computers, handled security, and set up the phone systems, then, years later, upgraded the wiring to Cat 6 and added firewalls and IP phones. Absolute Logic also recommended working with two separate Internet providers, so that if one connection fails the service switches to the other within minutes. They also refresh the pharmacy's computers every five or six years for security and speed, even when nothing is wrong.

“For somebody who is not that savvy with computers, Absolute Logic just kind of does everything. They walk you through everything, and it seems to be seamless, whether it's an emergency or just upgrades.”

Frank readily admits he isn't an IT expert, and believes he shouldn't have to be. After all, his job is running a pharmacy. Absolute Logic's job is to make sure the technology simply works, day in and day out. This is why Absolute Logic's hands-on approach is so important: It means the pharmacy gets modern, secure infrastructure and a planned upgrade path without anyone on staff having to understand or manage the details.

Keeping HIPAA and PCI Compliance Off Frank's Desk

Beyond keeping the systems running, Absolute Logic manages the compliance obligations that come with handling patients' payment and health information. Zitomer is subject to recurring PCI compliance scans (such as the one American Express runs on its schedule), and the pharmacy added dedicated PCI support from Absolute Logic a few years ago. When a scan is due, the alert goes to Frank and to Absolute Logic at the same time, and the team simply takes care of it for him.

“I get an alert, Absolute Logic gets the alert, and they just handle it on their end. I really don't have to do anything other than, once in a while, answering a questionnaire or signing a document.”

“They handle everything from soup to nuts, and I never have to worry about it.”

Having compliance handled in the background removes a burden that would otherwise land on a Zitomer team member that already has their own work to take care of. It also means the requirements are met on time, every time, without becoming a distraction.

A Firewall Failure at Dawn, Resolved Before Mid-Morning

The clearest test of that support came just recently. An overnight issue with Zitomer's Epicor point-of-sale system led to a firewall restart and, when the firewall came back, its power supply had failed, taking the whole system down. Thanks to an analog backup in place, the pharmacy still had phones, but no computers, which meant no filling prescriptions and no ringing up sales.

Frank called Al around six-thirty in the morning. Absolute Logic pulled a spare firewall from inventory, programmed it with Zitomer's settings at the office by seven, and sent someone to drive it down from Connecticut.

“Somebody got to the office at seven, programmed the unit, drove it down from Connecticut, and by nine or nine-thirty I was up and running. Who else is going to have a spare firewall, program it with my settings, and send somebody down from Connecticut to install it?”

The store was down for only a couple of hours, and because most of Zitomer's business is call-in prescriptions that are billed and delivered, the disruption was minimal. It is the kind of recovery few providers could manage on short notice, and exactly the kind a business dependent on live systems needs.

The Results

Across nearly thirty years with Absolute Logic, Zitomer Pharmacy has kept a demanding, high-volume operation running while modernizing the technology behind it. The engagement has delivered results across uptime, compliance, and daily operations:

Three Decades of Stability

Relied on a single IT partner for roughly thirty years, avoiding the disruption and risk of changing providers as the pharmacy's technology needs steadily grew.

Compliance Maintained Without Distraction

Met recurring HIPAA and PCI compliance requirements on schedule without drawing Frank away from running the pharmacy, as the work is handled on his behalf.

Consistent Uptime Protects Sales

Kept the pharmacy's registers, prescription systems, and phones running reliably, so the store rarely lost the ability to serve customers or fill orders on time.

Rapid Recovery From Outages

Recovered from a pre-dawn system failure and was serving customers again by mid-morning, limiting the outage to roughly two hours with minimal lost business.

Continuity When Connections Fail

Kept the store operating when an Internet connection failed, as a second provider took over automatically, allowing prescriptions and sales to continue without interruption.

Problems Resolved Within Minutes

Resolved issues within minutes by reaching a knowledgeable technician immediately, ensuring a business that cannot afford downtime is seldom held up for long.

Hardware Refreshed Before Failure

Kept systems fast and secure through scheduled hardware refreshes, replacing aging equipment before it could slow the store or fail during business hours.

Why Zitomer Pharmacy Recommends Absolute Logic

After thirty years, Frank's recommendation comes down to something simple:

“These days, when you call a company, you're not getting a human, or you're getting AI and spending twenty minutes trying to get somebody on the phone. That is not what Absolute Logic is about. It's somebody who picks up the phone, whether it's the owner or one of his staff members, who are just as knowledgeable, and calls you right back.”

That human responsiveness has become one of the defining characteristics of the relationship for Zitomer. That degree and consistency of access is not a nicety but a business necessity. With sixteen registers and hundreds of prescriptions filled every day, reaching a knowledgeable person who resolves the problem within minutes is what keeps a busy pharmacy from wasting hours it cannot spare. It is why, three decades in, Frank recommends Absolute Logic without hesitation.

How Absolute Logic Can Help

Whether you operate a pharmacy, medical practice, healthcare organization, financial institution, manufacturer, or other business that depends on technology, Absolute Logic helps organizations reduce risk, improve resilience, maintain compliance, and keep operations running.
